Toronto by Night Journal and its sister publication, Montreal By Night visited Kalyvia Restaurant on the Danforth Ave. in Toronto and discovered a true winner in Greek gastronomy. Under the superb family direction of chefs and owners Mike (Efthimios) and Peter (Petro) Tsafatinos, ably assisted by their two sons, both named Jim, these young lads are following in their fathers' footsteps excelling at the grill making sure each dish are made and prepared from authentic Greek recipes handed down for generations. These Greek chefs rank at the top of the list among their neighbours on Danforth Ave. They are all committed to making your visit an unforgettable experience in an atmosphere of true Mediterranean hospitality. A visit to Kalyvia Restaurant is like a trip to Greece without airfare. Just close your eyes, savor the aroma drifting from the kitchen, you will think you are sitting in a quaint taverna in Sparti or Kalyvia Greece.

Kalyvia Restaurant celebrated their 10 years anniversary in the new millennium, year 2000. The family has named and decorated this charming eatery after the town of Kalyvia, a few kilometers from Sparti in Greece, the birthplace of its owners where the Tsafatinos family still maintains a home.

Let's elaborate on the menu. A variety of authentic Appetizers grace the menu. You may begin with the Melitzanosalata, prepared by Mike and Peter with their own special recipe, puree of eggplant dip, oil, garlic, onion and special Greek spices. The Combos á la Kalyvia for two is a splendid way to experience tantalizing Greek tastes, a combination of Keftedakia, oktapodi toursi, spanakopitakia, tiropitakia, loukaniko, domades and tzatziki sauce, delight for the eyes as well as the palate.

At Kalyvia, you may order an Elafra Gevmata (Light Entrée) or a full course mea. Double Pork, Chicken or Lamb Souvlaki on a bun or pita, is a great way to indulge your midday meal. Or, for the bigger appetites, enjoy the Poikilia á la Kalyvia for two, a generous portion of tender chunks of beef or chicken sautéed with herbs and spices, and smothered in a tasty wine sauce.

For the Seafood Lover, the menu offers many tantalizing meals. Xifias– Swordfish – is cooked to perfection and seasoned just right with special herbs and spices, definitely an Award Winning Dish! Sample the treasures of the sea with the Kalyvia Seafood Platter, a delectable variety of calamari, shrimp, scallops, swordfish, bakaliaro, octopus and skaras. Poikilia Combo Seafood – shrimp, scallops and swordfish or Garides (shrimp) are also excellent choices. Choose a side order of Mushrooms á la Kalyvia or Feta to add to your meal for an extra treat.

For this little corner of Greece in Toronto, with its authentic homemade Greek cuisine prepared with style and a service done with friendliness, the Toronto by Night Journal and its sister publication, Montreal by Night at the Service of Conventions and Visitors since 1975 take great pleasure in awarding Kalyvia Restaurant a definite Four Star rating.
